Nicholas Tamagna

Creator

9 projects, 2016–2026

Not everything begins with a contract. Tamagna co-founded and chairs Forum neue Kunst Oldenburg e. V., where he runs the Münstermann Festival; he commissions new work from living composers and then performs and records it; he creates roles; and he devises the recitals he gives. What follows is the work he made rather than the work he was engaged for.

Dafne

2025

Heinrich Schütz, 1627 · libretto by Martin Opitz

Director and artistic director of the festival, and Cupido and Ovid

Dafne is widely held to be the first opera in the German language. Its music is lost but for fragments, and the performing version was reconstructed by Roland Wilson. Forum neue Kunst Oldenburg gave two performances in the Schlosssaal of Schloss Oldenburg with eighteen artists and a baroque orchestra of fourteen players on historical instruments. It is the only production in which Tamagna has directed and sung.

Raphael Fusco · original crime opera in Plattdeutsch

Created the role of Jesko Holm

A new crime opera written in Low German, commissioned by Forum neue Kunst Oldenburg as the association's founding production. Tamagna was a member of the association at the time, not yet on its board, and came to this one as the singer: the part of Jesko Holm was written for him and he gave its first performance.

Liisa Hõbepappel · chamber opera

Created the countertenor role

A chamber opera drawn from the old Estonian forest tale of the Seven Brothers, in which the figures on stage are not the brothers and maidens of the story but the states of mind they stand for. It was built the other way round from a conventional opera: instead of setting a finished libretto, the company started from improvisation and shaped text and music together across a winter and spring of open Residentuu:r sessions at the Estonian Center for Contemporary Music. The team is looking for a house for a fully staged version.

  • World premiere of the concert version, 10 May 2025

  • Libretto and stage direction: Eva Koldits

Live on Tape

2026

Sebastian Kloborg · music by Vivaldi, Caroline Shaw and Meredi

Countertenor in the world premiere, and wrote an additional verse to Feste's epilogue

One continuous piece of dance theatre rather than a set of arias with dancing around them. It is set in the old Radiohuset, the building it was performed in, and a tape recorder runs through the whole of it. The countertenor stands between two worlds: the orchestra's living, sounding one, and the dancers' fragmented one, which is reaching for him. He sings Vivaldi's "Cum dederit" and "Sovvente il sole", and Feste's epilogue from Twelfth Night, the song Alfred Deller recorded two generations earlier and from which the modern countertenor begins.
