At the world premiere of an opera about Magda Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s ruthless first lady, the brilliant, yet emotionally unstable drag queen diva Maria Halcón becomes her character both onstage and off when she learns she has been betrayed by the man she loves. This oneman show is an adaptation of Fisher’s screenplay Magda G, which folds in his opera Magda as an opera-within-a-play.
The opera that Maria stars in is Magda. Infused with hints of the Greek tragedy Medea, Magda (with libretto by Fisher and Amy Schrader) is based on the wife of Nazi Germany’s Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. Magda bore six children, whose names all began with the letter “H,” supposedly out of reverence for Hitler. In 1945, in the Führerbunker, Magda Goebbels murdered her children Medealike before committing double suicide with her husband. She wrote: “The world that comes after the Führer and national socialism is not any longer worth living in.”
